Municipal composting programs for food waste are few and far between in Maine, but there are many around the country and beyond. In Maine, most municipalities provide composting of leaf and yard waste, but few offer food scrap composting. Some towns partner exclusively with one of Maine’s compost collection companies to offer a discount for subscription-based collection service in the town. The more progressive cities offer a compost bin alongside the normal recycling and garbage bins in the city pick-up route. To save money and encourage households to separate their organic material, some cities offer to pick up compostable material every week, and alternate garbage and recycling every other week.
