NRCM is always pleased to see conservation easements in Maine’s North Woods. This easement prohibits further residential development and guarantees public access forever.
NRCM remains concerned about the size and location of the Plum Creek development, particularly on Lily Bay. Plum Creek’s 2,000 units around beautiful Moosehead Lake, including three resorts, is the largest development in Maine’s history.
We also remain concerned by the precedent set by Plum Creek being paid $10 million for this easement instead of donating it in return for the right to develop in this treasured landscape.
Plum Creek must now seek permits with LURC to proceed with any on-the-ground development. We have not seen any permits put forward yet, but we are monitoring this situation. If and when that time comes, we may choose to be involved in the permitting phase to help protect the lands, water and wildlife in the Moosehead region.
Our level of involvement would depend on where and what type of development Plum Creek proposes. If the company moves forward with development near Greenville, we may not be involved as we think that is an appropriate place for development. If they move forward with huge development on Lily Bay, we will likely be involved.
