“My four day solo backpacking trip in the less-traveled north of of Baxter State Park was full of challenges from getting around blowdowns and swatting bugs. I emerged from the steamy woods of the Freezeout Trail into a sunny opening just above Grand Pitch Falls on Webster Stream. I sat on the riverbank reveling in the coolness, the sun, and the dappled, clear water sweeping around a rock cliff to the tumult below. Looking upstream I noticed an object traveling diagonally across the river. The current brought a beaver almost to my feet. The beaver spent half an hour paddling leisurely up and down right in front of me, sampling branches while I too enjoyed a snack.” Photo by NRCM Board member Karen Herold of Cumberland Center, Maine
