“Barren Mountain is on the Appalachian Trail a little north of Monson, Maine. It’s only 2600′, but has a lot of steep sections through rocks that are unlike what you typically see in the White Mountains. It is 7.6 miles round trip. The views are great and the foliage was remarkable for this late in the year. In addition to beautiful views, Barren has very unusual geology for Maine which makes me want to learn more about our geology. You can see sharp rocks rather than the usual rounded by glacier boulders.” Photos by NRCM member Tony Marple of Whitefield, Maine
