NRCM member David Small of Old Town, Maine, has shared hundreds (if not thousands) of his photographs of birds throughout Maine over the years. Today, we learned that David has a favorite bird: the Black-capped Chickadee. (For those of you who don’t live in Maine, the Black-capped Chickadee also happens to be the State Bird of Maine.)
David writes, “Flittering among the branches of shrubs, bushes and trees, these birds, seemingly unafraid of me, will stop feeding and take a curious look at me, then continue to feed with their flock. Occasionally, other species like the kinglet, Tufted Titmouse, and White-breasted and Red-breasted Nuthatches will join them attracted by their calls and activity. Even at the backyard feeder they would not be fearful of coming close to me to get a seed.”
Here are some of David’s photos of chickadees he has seen in Old Town.
