Recreational boaters and anglers have long enjoyed access to Sheepscot Pond via a boat ramp conveniently located on Route 3, midway between Augusta and Belfast.
The pond, set amidst rolling, wooded hills in the southwestern corner of Waldo County, draws anglers in search of lake trout, brook trout, splake, landlocked salmon, white perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and chain pickerel.
Traditional use of this site, which is also home to the Sheepscot Lake Fish and Game Association’s club house, has been allowed only through a right of access limited to the life of that facility.
With funding from a Land for Maine’s Future program grant, the Maine Department of Conservation was able to acquire an easement that ensures the site will remain accessible to the public. The easement also helps to protect investments that the State has made at the site, including a new concrete boat ramp, and handicap accessible floats, parking, and toilets.
