Location: Put-in at boat landing on Collins Road, Manchester, Kennebec County
Description: Cobbosseecontee Lake is huge—too big to explore in a day! This is a rather sheltered paddle among small islands on the east side of the lake, starting from the outlet of Cobbossecontee Stream. There are ledge islands where you can get out and swim, and in among the islands, it feels like you are far from civilization even though in reality you’re only a 15-minute drive from the state capital! Often, you can see Common Loons giving their yodeling call, and Ospreys and Bald Eagles overhead.
Activities: Paddling, swimming, bird watching
Favorite Seasons to Visit: Summer
Why It’s Special: My family and I have been going to Cobbosseecontee Lake since I was a child, and now I bring my own children there.
Tips: Best on a calm day. Bring a map or gps (in a waterproof bag!) with you on your first paddle, since the lake is big and it can be easy to get disoriented. Pack a picnic lunch and your swim suit!
