September 19, 2019 (Augusta, ME) — A new Maine Climate Council announced today by Governor Janet Mills will soon begin its work of updating the state’s Climate Action Plan to transition the state toward a clean energy economy by 2050.
The 39 members of the Council represent a broad diversity of industries, geographic regions, and cultures from across Maine. Their primary charge is to create a roadmap for achieving the science-based commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 that was adopted into law earlier this year (and 45% by 2030).
The Natural Resources Council of Maine released the following statement from Climate & Clean Energy Director Dylan Voorhees in response to creation of the new Climate Council:
“The transition away from fossil fuels will bring with it new jobs, cleaner air, and a stronger economy, but we will need strong, effective statewide policy so that everyone in Maine benefits.
The Maine Climate Council is an essential ingredient of Maine’s new ambitious climate commitment, charged with taking our bold goals and turning them into opportunity on-the-ground for Maine residents and businesses.
