NRCM news release
The Board of Environmental Protection on June 21, 2001, voted unanimously in support of a plan to clean up nitrogen oxide NOx air pollution at Wyman Station in Yarmouth – Maine’s largest single source of air pollution. Of particular importance, the plan does not allow Wyman Station’s owner, Florida Power & Light Energy (FPL), to purchase “pollution credits” from other states as a way of avoiding the installation of emission controls on-site.
FPL will start installing new pollution control equipment at Wyman in the fall of 2002. The new controls will be placed on each of the four units at Wyman and will reduce nitrogen oxide pollution by 800 – 1200 tons per year, permanently.
This action will bring cleaner air to Maine, and is especially important to our children, the elderly and those with respiratory difficulties. Pollution will be reduced locally and as far downwind as Acadia National Park and beyond.
NRCM has been working to achieve this solution for the past three years and views this as Maine’s biggest clean air victory in 30 years.
