Earlier this month, the Natural Resources Council of Maine and our partners hosted a webinar with Mainers who are working with the Maine Climate Council (MCC) to create a new statewide Climate Action Plan. We have been calling on the MCC’s Working Groups to propose — and members to adopt — a strong and effective Climate Action Plan with concrete steps that will grow Maine’s economy, reduce air pollution, and build healthy, resilient, and equitable communities.

We were excited to see more than 400 people from across Maine participate in the webinar and breakout groups. We want to give a special thanks to the speakers who gave an informative and engaging update on what the Climate Council has been up to and what solutions must be included in the new Climate Action Plan:
- Greg Cunningham, Conservation Law Foundation: Energy Working Group
- Mike Williams, Blue Green Alliance: Transportation Working Group
- Jeff Marks, Acadia Center: Buildings, Infrastructure, and Housing Working Group
- Ivy Frignoca, Friends of Casco Bay: Coastal and Marine Working Group
- Eliza Donoghue, Maine Audubon: Natural and Working Lands Working Group
- Becca Boulos, Maine Public Health Association: Community Resilience, Public Health, and Emergency Management Working Group
More than 250 Mainers are involved in creating the next Climate Action Plan, with countless more involved by attending meetings and sending in suggestions.
The Climate Action Plan is due for submission to the Maine Legislature in December 2020, and recommendations will be made by the Working Groups soon. In January, NRCM, our members, coalition partners, and youth leaders came out in a big way to show support for the Maine Climate Council’s work. There are two more MCC meetings before the plan is complete. The next one includes two days of meetings on June 17th and 18th, where the Working Groups will submit their recommendations. Between June and the next MCC meeting in September, the Climate Council will collect public comments on the proposed recommendations.
