‘I took at trip to the EPI lands proposed for a new National Park and National Recreation Area this week. There is a lovely walk to one of many small ponds that is now marked along the Katahdin Loop Road. I had the great privilege of seeing a mother moose and her calf chilling out in the water at this pond. We did not want to disturb her but it doesn’t take much for moose to be alerted to strangers. Here they are getting out of the water and heading for the woods. Blessings to them!
The wild lands of northern Maine are phenomenal! NRCM is pleased to be working to garner local support for the new proposed National Park and National Recreation Area east of Baxter State Park. Glimpses of wildlife like this are very special. I’m pleased to share these and hope that many of you get the chance to see moose and other wildlife for yourself on a trip to the Great North Woods of Maine this summer or fall!
If you haven’t yet visited the Katahdin Woods and Waters Recreation Area, you might consider attending an upcoming event on the land. The Natural Resources Council of Maine is hosting a mountain bike adventure for bikers of all levels, next Saturday, July 19th, and there is still time to sign up. And later this summer, on Sunday, August 24, you are invited to a watercolor workshop with local artist Marsha Donahue, owner of North Light Gallery in Millinocket, to paint scenes from this beautiful land. We hope you can join us!

What a great photo! My son and I visited the area last October, and were also privledged to spot a moose grazing along the edge of a pond as we sat quietly eating our lunches. Unfortunately, we had left the camera in our car and opted to sit and enjoy the moose knowing that our movement would have sent it off into the surrounding forest. We were its guest, and we didn’t want to do anything to disturb it. The area is absolutely beautiful, and well worth the trip.
