As Maine reaches the peak of summer, people from far and wide travel to soak in the state’s idyllic weather, distinctive environment, and companionship of fellow adventurers. One activity stands out, offering an incomparable experience that both Mainers and tourists alike can enjoy, the experience of paddling across a wide array of Maine waters.
Growing up spending my summers in Maine by the water has cultivated my appreciation for paddleboarding. An activity cherished by my entire family, it evokes fond memories of warm weather, immersive experiences with nature, and an abundance of smiles. Now, as I continue to come home to Maine during the summers, I always make sure to reconnect and refresh my love of Maine by spending time on my paddleboard.
A standup paddleboard (SUP) is one of the many vessels in which you can experience Maine waters. Paddleboarding is a water sport that draws in people of all age ranges and skill levels. It involves a board, on which you can sit, kneel, stand, or even do yoga poses, and a single-ended paddle for moving throughout the water. In Maine there are options to rent and/or buy paddleboards, as well as companies that offer lessons and trips for people of all skill levels.
Before you can explore Maine from the water, it is crucial to understand some essential tips for having a successful experience:
- Learn the Basics: Master the kneeling position before standing up; practice proper paddle grip; engage your core while keeping a relaxed, wide stance, and look ahead.
- Do Your Research: Find calm and safe waters, research rules and regulations for the body of water you are exploring, find a good place to launch, be aware of weather conditions, and check the weather forecast before heading out.
- Wear the Right Gear: Dress appropriately for both the air and water temperature, wear a PFD (personal flotation device), and make sure to attach the leash/tether to your leg.
- Take Breaks: Paddleboarding can be physically taxing, so listen to your body, take breaks when needed, and make sure to stay hydrated. And, take time to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
- Respect Nature and Those Around You: Take care of and respect the environment you are in. Be mindful of wildlife and give others on the water plenty of space.
