Anglers have long enjoyed access to Patrick Lake, a 275-acre water body north of Machias that supports brown trout, chain pickerel, and white perch. They reached the lake via a boat launching ramp that many people assumed was publicly held but was in fact private. The landowner decided to sell the site as part of a larger parcel, raising concerns that traditional access might be closed off by new owners. Fortunately, the landowner agreed to divide off the existing boat access site and sell it to the Maine Department of Conservation (DOC). The site will ensure continued access to Patrick Lake and provide improved access to the adjoining 10,904-acre Rocky Lake Public Reserved Land managed by the DOC. Since the steep slopes on that property could not accommodate a new boat ramp, the State purchased the existing gravel boat launch, drive and parking lot, as well as the surrounding 2-acre site (with frontage on both Patrick Lake and State Route 86). The Land for Maine’s Future program provided the primary funding for this acquisition.
