NRCM member and frequent My Maine This Week photographer David Small of Old Town, Maine, writes, “For several years I’ve photographed the seasonal Purple Sandpiper at the Rockland Breakwater. It arrives, usually late fall early winter from Canada. It has become one of my favorite birds. If you’re respectful of its necessity to feed, and move slowly, and don’t stay too long, it will keep an eye on you, but continue to forage uninterrupted. I’ll actually feel disappointed if I fail to see one within a winter of searching…quite a remarkable bird.”
