The number of Maine schools that are diverting food waste is growing! Some schools have signed up for a composting service, while others compost their food waste on site. Other schools send their food waste to an anaerobic digester or partner with local pig farmers. Composting is the process of turning food waste back into soil; it’s how nature recycles! When food waste is mixed with a source of carbon such as dead leaves or horse manure, it will turn to soil within a year.

Maine Schools that Send Food Waste to Anaerobic Digester
Anaerobic digesters combine our food waste with animal waste to feed microorganisms in special tanks. When the tanks are kept at the right temperature (and occasionally agitated), biogas that can be used to produce energy is made.
