“A Common Merganser cruises the shallow waters of Taunton Bay in Hancock. No doubt looking for food and love. But seriously – with that hair??”

It’s the view of Mt. Katahdin from Abol Bridge, part of the Appalachian Trail. Thru-hikers going from south to north on the A.T. have been known to swoon at this sight, knowing the end is near.

• The sun sets inside Acadia National Park. Free professional photo tip: when shooting sunsets, try to face in a westerly direction.

A pair of birch trees pose for the photographer. They were awesome to work with. In fact, I believe they’re still posing to this day. (Lamoine)

A bull moose takes a late afternoon stroll in Sandy Stream Pond at Baxter State Park. I liked his attitude. You could say there was a sparkle in his eye.

beaver takes time out from his busy day to examine something yummy. Then he went right back to work, as beavers are wont to do. (Millinocket)

American Bitterns tend to “freeze” to avoid detection. It didn’t work this time. (Hancock)

The morning sun kisses the eastern slopes of Cadillac Mountain inside Acadia National Park. Free professional photo tip: when shooting sunrises, get there early.

A red fox kit plays with a leaf. They are easily amused, I’ve discovered. (Sullivan)

The Great Gray Owl is the Heidi Klum of the raptor world. Tall and thin, with that “come hither” look. (Acadia NP)

A Great Blue Heron makes himself at home in Sandy Stream Pond at Baxter State Park. Since that spot is reserved for moose, the heron didn’t stick around too long.

It’s the morning after a January ice storm moved through the town of Hancock. It was breathtakingly gorgeous, and I loved every minute of it. But then I tried to start my car….

Lupinosity: In some parts of Maine, the lupines are as tall as the evergreens. (Hancock)

Last October I went to Baxter State Park to photograph foliage. I was also hoping to spot a moose. Being the luckiest man on the face of the planet, I got both.

Behold a newborn harbor seal. He was probably wondering where his mommy went to. Well, she – was – right – behind – me. (Hancock)

Parachute Puffin: An Atlantic Puffin comes in for a landing on Machias Seal Island. They say any landing is a good one, but with puffins, I’m not so sure.

A cow moose seems smitten with me, as we play “peek-a-boo” for a few minutes. The feeling was mutual, but the relationship didn’t last long, sadly. (Baxter State Park)

A Pileated Woodpecker does his thing on a tree in Hancock. Big question to ponder: how come they never get headaches?

An Atlantic Puffin pauses for a portrait on her way to bringing lunch back to her newborn. I’m not sure I could resist eating it all myself, which might explain why I don’t have kids.

The Milky Way rises over the spot inside Schoodic known as Ravens’ Nest. It’s said there are more than 100 billion stars in the Milky Way. I’d like to meet the guy who counted them.

Here’s the classic view of Ravens’ Nest, inside the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park. I can tell you how to get there, but then I’d have to kill you. Sorry.

The look on this vixen’s face tells you I just woke her up from her afternoon nap. I can’t apologize enough for that. But she’ll be fine. And besides – I got the shot. (Hancock)

A bull moose goes for a refreshing meal in Russell Pond, inside Baxter State Park. Moose will sometimes stand in one place and eat for more than an hour - like your uncle Ned.

The setting sun caresses the pink granite rocks at Schoodic Point. It’s not like this every night there. Just enough to keep me coming back.

It’s sundown at Schoodic Point. There are very few things in life we can count on, but the setting sun is one of them.

You Talkin' to Me??? A baby harbor seal gives me some serious attitude. I can’t wait to see what he’s like when he grows up. Probably headed to prison. (Hancock)

A Snowy Owl winks at me. God only knows what this means. But we did swap phone numbers. (Trenton)

It’s South Turner Mountain inside Baxter State Park. It’s really underrated as mountains go, and deserves more credit. There. I just gave it some.

There wasn’t a breath of wind here at Sandy Stream Pond, as you can clearly see. In fact, I didn’t want to disturb the scene, so I didn’t breathe either. (Baxter State Park)

Imagine being a Bald Eagle, just hanging out at a pond, waiting for lunch to swim by. Must be like living in a deli. (Gouldsboro)

So there I was, photographing moose, when this snowshoe hare appeared next to me. I turned to take the shot and he jumped in the water, paddled around, pulled himself up out of the water, shook himself off, and disappeared into a hole. I kid you not. (Baxter State Park)

Now this is what I call “diversity.” One lone Wood Duck, hanging out among the Mallards. Can’t we all just get along? Why, yes. Yes, we can. (Somesville)
