Students at Palermo Consolidated School are in the midst of designing, marking, and flagging a recreational trail behind their school. This trail will be used as a community resource to increase physical activity such as hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. It will also provide a place for outdoor lessons. Check out their progress below in a report by Kathy Sparrow, leader of the project. Thanks for all your work creating a place for people to learn about and appreciate the outdoors!
Boots are on the ground in Palermo! Recently, staff members of the Palermo Consolidated School led 7th and 8th graders on a hiking tour of the school’s newly created “Nature and Learning Trail.” The trail, consisting of a series of short loops, was flagged and partially cut this past summer and fall, with much work still to be done. Students were excited to view what the woods behind their school had to offer, using their hike to gather observations to help them create a brochure which may include things like trail descriptions, ideas for recreational and educational use, science and conservation connections, as well as a trail map.
The Palermo School’s Physical Education teacher, Mr. Edward, quickly jumped on the chance to get kids on the existing trails. He said the addition has been “fantastic,” and has allowed him to expand his winter sports units to include activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, where and when snowfall amounts have allowed.
Work before the spring thaw will include the creation of the brochure and signs and blazes to mark trails, as well as continued efforts by teachers to collect information and ideas for using the trail in connection with school curriculum and fitness and recreation opportunities.
